andrea mitchell live in washington where we are awaiting hamid karzai and president obama who will be addressing reporters in the east room following their meetings on the pace of the u.s. troop withdrawals. one big disagreement? the white house suggestion this week of a zero option, a withdrawal of all u.s. troops after 2014 leaving no residual force at all, but, first, the big domestic issue here at home. what to do about gun violence. the white house is pushing back hard on suggestions that they do not believe they can win a ban on assault weapons, and are focussing on other options. in fact, a senior administration official tells me within the hour that an assault weapons ban and background checks are both going to be in the final set of proposals that go to the president despite all reports to the controversy. the nra president who met with vice president biden yesterday is drawing a hard line on assault weapons. >> we don't think that a ban on so-called assault weapons, which hasn't worked in the past, is going to work this time. we think manufacture those are feel good

president hamid karzai is in town. he's going to be discussing the u.s. role in afghanistan post-2014. the u.s. or at least the white house is signaling it wants out of afghanistan and the white house disclosing a zero option. that is withdrawal or bust as a negotiating tactic. that's what this is. while troop levels aren't formally on the menu, the scope and size of the post-2014 force will be the focus of this trip by karzai and includes he's got meetings at the state department, and the pentagon. then with president obama on friday. security is tight. karzai hasn't been caught on camera yet. this green tarp blocked any view of the walkway to blair house where karzai will stay during his visit. the assumption is that the afghan president who's political power and life really have depended on the u.s., that he probably wants a bigger u.s. footprint in afghanistan than he'll ever say because of his own domestic political reality. asked yesterday on a conference call previewing the visit whether it's possible there will be zero u.s. troops on the ground after 2014, deputy national security ad

. it is a privilege to welcome back to georgetown the president of afghanistan hamid karzai. we look forward to hearing his remark on afghanistan beyond 2014, a perspective on afghan- u.s. relations. 2014 will be an historic year for afghanistan as it will witness elections across the country and the end of u.s. and is combat operations. as president obama, secretary of state clinton and many of this room have emphasized this transition provides us with the opportunity for diplomatic and cultural relations between our peoples. at georgetown, we are proud to be a part of this critical work notably through the u.s. afghan women's council. the council is a public private partnership that has been housed here at the university since 2008. it was founded in 2002 by president karzai and president bush in support of afghan women and children. it's focused its work of areas of education, health, economic empowerment, leadership development, and humanitarian assistance. since its founding the council has created call leadership,-- scholarships, ski provided skills training, literacy and health care,
